What does a retail security company do?
On May 6, 2021 by AndrewIn a nutshell, retail security companies are hired by retailers to help minimise losses due to shoplifting and employee theft. You could also say they are there to protect the bottom line. In fact, in our industry one of our most important jobs is to provide loss prevention and inventory shrinkage control services for clients. What does that mean?
Well, let’s think about it. Most retail shops suffer losses due to fraudsters and thieves, but if you’re not actively minimising shrinkage and just accepting it, you’re going to be struggling to keep your doors open before long. In fact, you really do need to invest in proper loss prevention services now if you haven’t already. And that’s when retail security companies come into play. They offer an important service by installing sophisticated equipment at your store and providing the staff training needed to use it effectively (both hardware and software). So how does all this work? Well, there are different types of security companies:
- Manned guarding comapnies
- Security equipment specialists
- Remote CCTV monitoring companies
That said, there are many security firms that offer all of these services, and that’s exactly what you’ll find if you are searching for a security company Birmingham.
What does retail security guarding involve?
- Retail security officers are highly skilled with excellent analytical skills.
- They gain experience and knowledge of the retail world.
- The security officers are responsible for safeguarding their client’s goods and profits from theft or damage.
- A security officer is in charge of preventing thefts at all times.
- Security companies place immense trust in these individuals to protect their clients’ interests.
That said, the security industry is not as simple as you might think. There are a lot of different roles and companies out there so it’s important that we understand what each individual role in retail security does. Some will monitor the entrance and check bags, otherwise will be more proactive wandering around the shop and then you have those who monitor using CCTV and jump into action when required. Of course, when they’re not busy checking bags and monitoring, they’ll likely be doing paperwork or scanning the CCTV footage of the whole shop.
There is no such thing as security officer jobs for those who like to laze around. In fact, it’s more demanding than most people expect. The role can involve working night shifts, identifying suspicious behaviour and vulnerabilities before a big problem occurs.
Brand Protection
A big part of the role as a retail security officer is protecting the brand. The last thing you want to have happened is an incident that damages your reputation and forces people away from your store. And in cases like these, it’s all about prevention rather than cure. You can’t change the past, but you can ensure you learn from it!
Fraud Prevention
With an increasing number of fraud-related crimes, it’s important that you take the necessary steps to prevent them from occurring in your business. Customers and staff need to be kept safe from physical harm as well as financial loss. This can happen through prevention measures like CCTV surveillance or by acting quickly when a suspicious situation arises.
